Sound bar systems can range from $80 to beyond $500 and with that info alone, you can probably get a sense of what to expect from the cheap, midrange and expensive sound bars. The cheapest sound bars may deliver average audio quality without any special features. But average quality for a sound bar will always be better than most TVs since their built-in speakers often have very small drivers. Still it is important to know what things you are rewarded with if you spend just a little bit more on a sound bar. It can be quite difficult to figure that out since there are so many companies that each have their own takes on sound bars. But if value is your focus, VIZIO is a good brand to think of given their reputation in the TV business. The VIZIO S3821W-C0 is one of the entry-level models priced at $179 although it comes with some of pleasant surprises.
The first surprise lies in the design of the S3821W-C0. It actually doesn’t look like a very cheap product. VIZIO has already proven that it can design a great budget TV in 2013 so the company is applying this design language to their sound bar products. This makes perfect sense because both the VIZIO TV and sound bar look good together. The common characteristic that the sound bar shares with the TV is the unique logo placement. The VIZIO logo can be found on the bottom left of the sound bar so it kind of looks out of the way but is still noticeable since there are no other elements on the front other than the set of LED indicators on the far left of the VIZIO S3821W-C0.
These indicators behave in their own unique ways depending on the function. Pressing the “Input” button, for instance, will light up 2 of the 12 lights but the positioning of these lights depend on the selected mode. As you switch to other modes, you will notice the pair of lights moving. When you use the “Bluetooth” button to enable pairing mode, all the lights will continuously flash from left to right and back. Both the “Input” and “Bluetooth” buttons can be found on the side of the sound bar along with the volume and power controls. The sides slant back so the back ends up being a bit shorter than the 38-inch sound bar front.
You will need the remote control if you plan on making finer adjustments such as quickly muting the sound bar, enabling special sound enhancing technologies and manipulating playback. The “Previous” and “Next” buttons also double as decrease and increase functions when adjusting the treble and bass. Batteries are already included in the package so you don’t have to purchase them separately.
Unlike the VIZIO S3820W-C0, which costs $60 cheaper, the S3821W-C0 comes with a separate subwoofer so you can expect better bass performance. This inclusion might not seem to be a big deal for those that may already have a subwoofer but the VIZIO subwoofer included in the package can wirelessly connect to the sound bar. Because of this, you can mount the sound bar to the wall without worrying about wiring issues. The wall mounting template, screws and wall mount brackets are all included so all it takes is the basic tools to mount the sound bar to the wall.
The VIZIO S3821W-C0 also remains pretty easy to setup as it comes with all the audio cables you need to get started. You can stick with the classic stereo RCA to 3.5mm cable for older TVs or you can go fully digital and enjoy better quality and Dolby Digital support.
The other surprise addition to the S3821W-C0 is the inclusion of Bluetooth connectivity. It looks like VIZIO wants to make Bluetooth the standard for most of its sound bars moving forward since there are so many smartphone and tablet owners. The sound bar will remain as a component for the TV but having that Bluetooth functionality means that you don’t have to buy a separate Bluetooth speaker for the house. Bluetooth also opens more possibilities than one might think. Obviously, you can play back any MP3 files to the VIZIO S3821W-C0 but you can load up one of the many apps that can stream music to your device online. If you can listen to the music through your device’s speaker, you should have no trouble in beaming the music to the speaker for superior audio quality.
With close to 100db an 1% Total Harmonic Distortion, the VIZIO S3821W-C0 is a pretty loud and clear sound bar and it should be since this particular model is meant for 30 to 40-inch TVs. You might even be able to make the S3821W-C0 sound even better if you try turning on the DTS TruSurround function as it virtualizes the surround sound effect so some movies sound noticeably improved.
If you plan on using your sound bar for TV activities along with plenty of music listening on the side, the VIZIO S3821W-C0 is a great choice at $179. The Bluetooth feature really adds value because you no longer need to make wired connections to the sound bar. If you noticed, the VIZIO S3821W-C0 and VIZIO S3820W-C0 are identical if you just take away the subwoofer. This selection is a huge win for customers because some folks may want a cheap sound bar with Bluetooth functionality while others are contented with a 2.0-channel system.
