If you are heavily invested in Apple’s platform and products, the Libratone Lounge speaker may be the perfect product for your home. You can use it for casual listening and some serious music appreciation as it is capable of some natural and rich sonics.
These Airplay-enabled speakers allow you to stream music from your iPod, iPhone and iPad, as long as you are running iTunes 10.1 or later and iOS 4.2 or later on your mobile devices. It comes in various color to match your home decor.
No remote control is provided but an app is available for controlling the speaker. There is a common port for the 3.5mm and optical connector at the base of the unit. As soon as you insert the optical cable, the connection to your TV is instantaneous. Remember to download the app though. It is here where you control the volume. The app is also available for Android devices. As this speaker is primarily designed for Apple devices, the controls on the Android app are rudimentary at best.
Performance wise, the Libratone produces a natural ambiance with enough dynamics to fill the room. Despite its lack of a subwoofer, the bass output is adequate for most music and movies.
The Libratone is roughly the same length as other sound bars but is is twice as tall. That explains it ability to provide wholesome bass. When you are watching a movie, the wide surface and spread of the speaker make the surround sounds distinct and wide from both sides of the room. The sound spectrum is evenly spread across the highs, mids and lows.
The only setback is that the height of the speaker does not allow it to be placed in front of your TV as most sound bars do as it may block the lower part of the screen. The ideal placement for it is to mount it on the wall below a wall mounted TV.
At $1299 it is not a cheap speaker by any means. However if you value great sound and good design this single box unit will give most audiophile speakers a good run for its money.
