LG has been making great traction in people’s living rooms since the acquisition of WebOS. The Korean giant is using the open-source operating system as a vehicle for driving their TVs. Combine that with their cutting-edge technologies and you have a force to be reckon with. But outside of TVs, LG isn’t a popular choice for other living room products like sound systems. That isn’t stopping LG from ambitiously trying to promote their new sound bar products because the company knows that customers buying LG TVs will likely buy matching LG speaker systems. LG even plans to release a curved sound bar to complement their new curved TVs. Of course, not everyone has the money to purchase those premium products which is why LG has a couple of entry-level sound bars as well. The LG LAS551H is a bold attempt to convince people to upgrade their sound experience without spending a fortune.

About the LG LAS551H
The LAS551H is LG’s most affordable sound bar with a wireless subwoofer released in 2015. Measuring 35 inches wide, this sound bar looks best with 40-inch TVs although it should be considered a nice sound upgrade for larger TVs, too. The LG LAS551H consists of a 200-watt wireless subwoofer and the main sound bar unit which houses a pair of 60-watt tweeters.
Also included with the LAS551H is a standard remote control, optical cable, USB gender and wall mount bracket. If you have a spare HDMI cable, you can also use the HDMI input and outputs and take advantage of the Audio Return Channel if your TV supports it.
Unlike LG’s other pricier sound bars, you won’t get any of the fancy features like Wi-Fi, Google Cast and Music Flow Multi-room. Only two major features remain with the most important being built-in Bluetooth. The best thing about Bluetooth is any mobile device with Bluetooth should be able to stream audio wirelessly to the LG LAS551H. This Bluetooth capability is also a bit special as serves as the backbone for LG’s proprietary Sound Sync Wireless technology which is the other major feature of the LAS551H. It only works for modern LG TVs that have the technology as well. This technology makes it easy to connect the sound bar to a supported LG TV wirelessly. The idea of having a subwoofer, sound bar and TV connected to each other without wires is pretty cool.
With a sub-$300 price tag, all the LAS551H needed to do is decisively beat the average TV in audio quality and this sound bar easily succeeded. Setting up the sound bar is really easy and it did a pretty decent job in enhancing movie dialog. The subwoofer isn’t all that mind-blowing and the Bluetooth lacks the aptX codec which is supposed to enhance Bluetooth audio playback but the overall audio quality is good enough in convincing you to never go back to internal TV speakers. The remote control also has a couple of equalizer functions so you still have a chance to make the audio quality a bit better, depending on the content playing.
• Easy to set up.
• Big audio quality improvement over built-in TV speakers.
• Has HDMI ports with ARC support.
• Can wirelessly link to certain LG TVs.
• Uninspired design.
• Slightly more expensive sound bars sound better and have more features.
The LG LAS551H is a cheap no-frills sound bar that is sure to upgrade your TV’s audio performance. It also doubles as a fairly nice and big Bluetooth speaker with wireless subwoofer. Considering the fact that there are Bluetooth speakers that cost more than the LAS551H, it’s a good overall deal.
